What's your favorite Queen song, and why?
I think for me this question is "what is your current favorite Queen song?" because it's always changing. I like to spread the love around. Everyone loves "We Are the Champions" and "Tie Your Mother Down," but some of the early stuff never gets the love. Like
Queen II. I think the only weak track on there is "Loser in the End" (sorry, Roger.) But there are other albums where I will skip multiple tracks unless I'm really in the mood to listen to the whole album.
However, if we want to say "What is the one Queen song that you will consistently turn up the volume on and sing at the top of your lungs, and even wait in the driveway for it to end if it's on the radio, even though you own multiple versions of it?" well, I have an answer for that.
It's "Fat Bottomed Girls." One, it rocks. Great rhythm work from Roger and John, BRILLIANT guitar from Brian, and Freddie sings with gusto. Oh, and great harmonies. But secondly is the message. Brian says he wrote it partly as a tribute to all those fans who stuck with them through the early years--that they are all beautiful and appreciated.
(It should be noted that Freddie also wrote around this theme in "Now I'm Here.")
Happy birthday, Mr. Mercury. Still loved and still missed.
